Vattenfall hat bereits zwischen 2008 und 2014 CCS-Technologien in Europa getestet. Laut Aker Carbo Capture hat CCS seither jedoch viele Fortschritte gemacht, so dass mehrere Projekte sowohl auf der Abscheidungs- als auch auf der Speicherseite vorangetrieben werden.

Das Unternehmen hat das norwegische Demonstrationsprojekt Longship (Langskip) mit seiner Offshore-Speicheranlage Northern Lights als ein Beispiel hervorgehoben. Auch Dänemark plant ein "Greensand"-Speicherprojekt, bei dem die bestehende Infrastruktur von Ölplattformen genutzt wird.

Das Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ist nicht exklusiv und deckt Dienstleistungen ab, die Vattenfalls Ambitionen in Bezug auf CCS vorantreiben, und hat eine Laufzeit von zwei Jahren

The agreement was signed by Aker Carbon Capture CEO, Valborg Lundegaard and CVP of Energy Industry at Microsoft, Darryl Willis. The parties have a shared goal of accelerating the development of a functioning marketplace for CCUS and believe that the combined technical expertise will allow to further strengthen these efforts.

At the Forefront
Microsoft and Aker Carbon Capture have a history of successful collaboration, including an MoU with Danish energy company Ørsted to explore opportunities to deploy carbon capture at a bio energy plant in Denmark.

OSLO, Norway, May 11, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Aker Carbon Capture has officially commenced building its Just Catch modular carbon capture plant at Twence's waste-to-energy plant in Hengelo, the Netherlands. Building activities at the site were kicked off with the unveiling of the construction board. The plant will reduce CO2 emissions associated with the generation of energy from the incineration of non-recyclable waste. The captured CO2 will be used in liquid form in the greenhouse horticulture sector. By the end of 2023, the Just Catch standardized plant will start capturing 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Twence mainly generates energy from non-reusable residual and industrial waste and is the largest producer of sustainable energy in the Dutch province of Overijssel. Twence will capture and recycle part of the CO2 that is released when generating energy. In doing so, Twence will make a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in the region and thus also to achieving the climate targets of its shareholders. In November 2021, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs provided a subsidy of EUR 14.3 million, chiefly because the initiative contributes to the national target to quickly reduce CO2emissions and because it sets an example for other large companies in the industry at home and abroad.

Making the greenhouse horticulture sector more sustainable
A large part of the captured CO2 will be delivered in liquid form to the greenhouse horticulture sector. CO2 is necessary for the growth of crops. It is now mainly produced by burning natural gas. Should the greenhouse horticulture wish to make the switch away from natural gas, the sustainable CO2 from Twence will be an alternative. In doing so, Twence is making an important contribution to making the greenhouse horticulture sector more sustainable.
