Korea’s Showbox picks up Planet One and Stopping Power

Jean Noh in Cannes

17 May 2007 04:45

Major Korean distributor Showbox Mediaplex has picked up animation Planet One from Handmade Pictures and the high-octane Jan de Bont action film Stopping Power from IM Global.

Made by former Pixar talent, the animation project featuring green aliens is written by Joe Stillman (Shrek 1, 2, 3).

Chris H. Lee, vice president of acquisitions at Showbox signed the deal with Fred Headman, vice president of sales at Handmade.

Showbox can take advantage in marketing the film as Korea’s first astronaut is due to go to space in April 2008.

Planet One has a target US release date for the end of 2008 and a day-and-date release in Korea. “The film is a perfect winter vacation movie for Showbox,” says Lee.

Stopping Power, the upcoming Jan de Bont (Speed, Tomb Raider 2) film, features John Cusack maneuvering through a high-speed car chase on the autobahn.

With a slew of other Korean bidders chasing the film, Lee closed the deal with Ruzanna Kegeyan, vice president of sales at IM Global.

The Terminator is coming back.

The Halcyon Co. -- a recently formed, privately financed film development, production and financing company headed by co-CEOs Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek -- has acquired the franchise rights to the popular movie series from C2's Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna, intending to make a new trilogy that would anchor their movie company.

The deal is said to be in the tens of millions of dollars.

"Terminator 4" will be based on a script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, which was part of the transaction. Halcyon plans to immediately begin preproduction on the film. While no distribution agreement has been set, Halcyon is hoping that "T4" will be ready for release in the first half of 2009.

The deal includes the right to produce any future "Terminator" films, as well as all future merchandising and licensing rights, certain future revenue derived from "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," as well as certain rights in the television project "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and the sole right to produce all future "Terminator" projects in any new or existing media.

Halcyon pursued the "Terminator" rights aggressively for several months, knowing that the series is one of the few recognizable properties out there not in the hands of a major studio. Halcyon also is concentrating on a merchandising and licensing push for the property.

Moritz Borman, who executive produced "T3" as the then-CEO of Intermedia Films, the movie's co-production financial partner, will act as producer on "T4." Former PolyGram Films marketing president Peter D. Graves will be executive producer and oversee marketing of the picture. Kubicek and Anderson will co-produce.

The rights to "Terminator" have changed hands several times.

Kassar acted as an exec producer for "T2," and he and Vajna acquired interests from Gale Anne Hurd -- who produced the first one and exec produced the second -- when the duo were creating C2 and making "T3." C2 was a new version of their Carolco banner, which was behind "T2."

Prior to co-founding Halcyon, Anderson was the founder and creative director of In the Mix, a boutique marketing and advertising agency, which was sold in 2000. Kubicek began his career in finance as a member of the American Stock Exchange and produced Halcyon's first feature "Cook-Off!"

Halcyon is repped by Alan Schwartz, Randy Paul and Vincent Chieffo of Greenberg Traurig.

Shanghai fest fields U.S. pitches

Industry executives storm event

By PATRICK FRATER

Chinese bizzers at the Shanghai Film Festival were Monday treated to an array of industry execs who predicted how the Chinese movie industry would grow and gave them free introductions into the international movie biz.
"Demand for all things Chinese is growing," Endgame Entertainment prexy, Douglas E. Hansen, told the fest's conference series. "We can bring some structured finance into the Chinese market, we can bring stories and we can package."

Endgame, which three years ago morphed from a financier into a producer-fund manager, already has a stake in China through an alliance with Teddy Zee's Ironpond shingle.

Hansen said Chinese movies most likely to attract overseas coin were big-budget spectaculars, genre titles and those that have already worked in other media.

Significantly, he said, "We can finance fully Chinese movies," without requiring them to break out into global markets.

Yu Dong, CEO of Beijing Poly Bona, China's leading privately owned distributor, forecast that the country's B.O. would grow from 2.6 billion yuan ($341 million) last year to $460 million this year and said $2.6 billion is possible in 10 years.

Yu said Chinese companies needed to concentrate on building the local market and not expect too much from the export sector, as Chinese films would face rising competition from local movies. He told them to get ready for mergers and acquisitions that could make the private sector players bigger and stronger.

He also added that market restrictions made it a "golden time" for Chinese firms to invest in their own movies.

"Quotas and censorship affect imported movies, therefore we are choosing to develop local movies and the local market," he said and reminded the eager foreigners they couldn't invest directly in Chinese movie companies.

First Look Intl.'s managing director Stuart Ford delivered a carefully crafted overview of how the international sales business was evolving and suggested that Chinese companies needed to learn how to use sales agents to raise coin, establish marketing credentials and deliver movies to the world market.

Demographics were a recurring theme in the discussions. "I, Robot" and "Catch Me if You Can" producer Michel Shane said Chinese producers could tap new forms of finance if a film had its demos right.

He said half of the $10 million budget for his upcoming snowboarding heist movie "Band on the Run" had come from advertising agencies eager to tap into a youth market.

Zhang Qingyong, CEO of specialist ad agency Filmore Media, said movies were increasingly attractive as vehicles for consumer goods companies.

He cited examples of tie-ups between "Hero" and handset manufacturer Dopod, "Stuart Little" and Coca-Cola and "Lord of the Rings" and China Mobile's M-Zone subsid, as particularly effective campaigns.

CTB Market research deputy general manager Tian Tao said films scored very highly with youth market -- some 82% of cinema auds come from 15-34 age group.

L'Oreal China deputy prexy Lan Zhengzhen said film was increasingly important to advertisers as it provided aspirational and "emotional responses" that TV and print media could not provide.

Holland to Helm National Lampoon's Ratko
Source: National Lampoon Inc. June 7, 2007

National Lampoon Inc. today announced plans for its next in-house feature production, National Lampoon's Ratko: The Dictator's Son, and the signing of Savage Steve Holland (Better Off Dead, How I Got Into College) to direct the picture.

The announcement was made by National Lampoon chief executive officer Daniel Laikin.

"This is an exciting project for National Lampoon. It appeals to our core audience and follows in the footsteps of our college comedies of the past," stated Laikin. "It's films like this, and people like Savage Steve Holland, that we look for as we continue to build our feature library."

"Ratko" is a fish-out-of-water-story, the tale of a dictator's son who heads to America to attend college. National Lampoon's Ratko: The Dictator's Son was written by Robert Mittenthal (Cry Baby Lane) and Michael Rubiner (Rootboy) and is co-produced by InterMedia and produced in association with Cinetel Films. The film is produced by Barry Layne. InterMedia's Scott Kroopf (The Last Samurai, Runaway Bride) is executive producer. For Cinetel, Lisa Hanson is executive producer, Bill Berry is co-producer and Paul Hertzberg is producer.

"Ratko" follows National Lampoon's Bagboy, the first feature to be produced and financed in-house by National Lampoon in the company's 35 plus year history. "Bagboy," directed by Mort Nathan, stars Dennis Farina, Brooke Shields, Richard Kind, Larry Miller, Paul Campbell, Marika Dominczyk, Robert Hoffman, Josh Dean, Wesley Jonathan, Nick Lashaway, Bruce Altman and Lisa Darr.

National Lampoon's Ratko: The Dictator's Son will receive theatrical distribution through National Lampoon Releasing and National Lampoon Home Entertainment is handling DVD and related platforms.

National Lampoon Releasing plans to release up to twelve titles per year comprised of four original movies and up to eight acquisitions. Distribution will be handled independently by National Lampoon with some titles having broader distribution in partnership with major studios.
