From concept to product development

While Dyesol’s research collaboration with NTU is focused on mid-term research and development activities in the field of solid-state DSC, the commercial relationship with Printed Power is focused on short-term product development.

With the introduction of Dyesol’s ssDSC material set in May 2014, sales have continued to increase consistently month-on-month. This expanded material set was the catalyst for further discussions with Sigma-Aldrich who welcomed the opportunity to distribute Dyesol’s entire material set, including Titania pastes, electrolytes, platinum paste and additional dyes.

Yanek concluded, “Dyesol will introduce another large set of perovskite precursors as well as additional cobalt dopants in November further expanding Dyesol’s range of materials and Sigma-Aldrich’s product selection, both aimed at growing the DSC and ssDSC materials market.”

Dyesol has very close research and development relationships with English and Welsh Universities such as Manchester, Sheffield, Bath and Bangor, and is working on a number of collaborative projects. Here we provide a short summary of the work underway at Dyesol UK, and introduce new UK team members who have joined to focus on Dyesol’s manufacturing processes.

Dyesol UK secures funding

Dyesol secures funding to demonstrate the commercial potential of ssDSC.

The British government has confirmed its support of Dyesol’s activities in the UK by awarding Innovative UK and Engineering Science and Physical Research Council (EPSRC) funding to the value of £280 000 to scale up Dyesol’s core

Fast forward to 2014, and Dyesol is once again entering a new phase in Korea, consolidating its position by acquiring the remaining stake in Dyesol-Timo from Neoarena (formerly Timo-Technologies). This provides a spring-board to move to the next phase of process development, and provides a development hub for the region. The acquisition enables a closer integration with Dyesol’s strategic direction, and to maximise opportunities arising from the Turkish contract.

Wissenschaftler im schweizerischen Lausanne sind bei der Entwicklung von Photosynthese-Zellen einen wichtigen Schritt vorangekommen. Diese Zellen sollen aus Sonnenenergie Wasserstoff produzieren. Ein Forscherteam berichtet im Fachmagazin "Science" über einen effizienten und kostengünstigen Weg. Die sogenannte Perowskit-Solarzellentechnik habe eine Effizienz von 12,3 Prozent erreicht. Eine Gewinnung von Wasserstoff durch Sonnenlicht würde ein Problem der Solarenergie lösen: Sie ist nur tagsüber verfügbar und zudem schwierig zu speichern. Der Wasserstoff hingegen kann in Tanks gelagert werden.


Seit Jahren arbeitet das australische Solar-Startup Dyesol an sogenannten Farbstoffsolarzellen. Nahezu in jeder Farbe lassen sich diese Zellen herstellen. Das Unternehmen will sie als dünne Schicht auf Fassaden aus Stahl drucken oder sogar durchsichtig auf Glasscheiben auftragen.

Ein amerikanisches Tüftler-Ehepaar sammelte mehr als eine Million Dollar ein, um Straßen aus Solarmodulen in Serie zu bauen. Die Solarstraße von Julie und Scott Brusaw sollen Strom erzeugen und ins Netz einspeisen. Mit der Energie könnten dann auch Elektroautos aufgeladen werden. Zudem sind die Solar Roadways beheizbar und verfügen über LED-Lichter, die als Fahrbahnmarkierungen fungieren.

An der Universität im australischen Melbourne entstand die größte Zelle der Welt, die in einem 3D-Druckverfahren hergestellt wird. Der Drucker für die Herstellung der organischen Solarzelle kostet derzeit noch 200000 australische Dollar. Künftig soll die Technik so günstig werden, dass wir sie uns ins Wohnzimmer stellen können.
