Stand-alone online procurement vendors such as Ariba will be nonexistent within
three years, said Gartner Group analyst David Hope-Ross, at a technology conference last week. The comments, which were brought to light Friday in a Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown. research note, pushed the sector down. Ariba seemed to be hit the hardest, however, losing $1.25, or 15.3%.
Investors are expecting the Gartner Group to issue a more comprehensive note on online procurement stocks, especially Ariba, in the coming months, Michael Hughes, analyst at Raymond James & Associates. The Stamford, Conn., research group is "a well-regarded" firm, and influences investors, Hughes said.
Internet software companies are also under pressure from a general sell-off in technology Monday, analysts said. For many of these companies, there has been increasingly a "realization that the road to recovery will be more than just a few weeks away," Richard Davis, analyst at Needham & Co.
Shares of Ariba were off 94 cents, or 13.5%, to $5.96. Officials from the Mountian View, Calif. company weren't available for comment.
Also down in the Internet software group has been Broadvision Inc. (BVSN, news, msgs), off 73 cents, or 11.1%, to $5.83, and I2 Technologies (ITWO, news, msgs), off 3.4% to $18.94.
