Ciena to supply optical equipment to Telmex
(Adds analyst comment, background, stock action)
LINTHICUM, Md., July 9 (Reuters) - Telecommunications equipment maker Ciena Corp. (NasdaqNM:CIEN - News) said on Tuesday it will supply networking gear for Mexican telephone company Telefonos de Mexico's (Mexico:TELMEXL.MX - News; NYSE:TMX - News) next-generation phone network.

The deal, whose terms were not disclosed, is Ciena's first with Telmex. Lehman Brothers analyst Steve Levy estimated the deal's value at $20 million to $40 million.
"Telmex is a pretty big buyer and getting in the door there is important," he said. "This is a very dense implementation of CoreDirectors." CoreDirector is Ciena's optical switches.
Ciena Chief Executive Gary Smith said last month that capturing business with even two or three more major carriers would make a big difference for Ciena.
The company, hurt like many suppliers by the slowdown in capital spending by telecom customers, warned in June that third-quarter revenues would be "down meaningfully" even after including its acquisition of ONI Systems Corp. the same month.
Smith said earlier this year that the Linthicum, Maryland-based company would focus on larger, established telephone carriers and this is the first deal closed with such a company since then.
In February, Ciena announced a deal it had closed earlier with AT&T Corp. (NYSE:T - News) to supply the long-distance carrier with CoreDirector switches .
Ciena said it has already started shipping products and deployment is under way in Telmex's more than 70,000-kilometer (40,000-mile) fiber-optic digital network.
The Mexican carrier will initially deploy Ciena's optical switches to allow for continued growth in data service traffic.
Ciena's stock traded early Tuesday at $4.79 on the Nasdaq, up 2 cents. It has fallen about 65 percent since the end of last year.
