Rakuten Gets Closer to Opening Cryptocurrency Exchange

Rakuten Wallet, the upcoming Japanese digital asset exchange, is a step closer to launching, as potential traders are invited to create accounts.

“We are pleased to announce that we have started accepting applications for opening new accounts for the asset (virtual currency) trading service "Rakuten Wallet,” the company stated in its official announcement.

The new exchange will work under the brand Rakuten Wallet, changing from the initial registration as Everybody’s Bitcoin. The market operator is fully approved by the Japanese Financial Services Agency (FSA).

Advantage will be given to customers with accounts in Rakuten Bank, who can immediately fill in registration forms.

Spanish micromobility startup MOVO, a subsidiary of the local Uber rival Cabify, has raised €20 million in a funding round led by Mutua Madrileña, with participation from Seaya Ventures and Cabify. The company plans to use the fresh funding to expand in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.

Founded in 2017, MOVO is an e-scooter and moped sharing platform that currently operates in Spain, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Peru. The company plans to increase its fleet across Latin America and be present in 10 countries by the end of this year.

MOVO emphasises that it’s willing to work together with municipal governments in the cities it operates in, as well as help creating relevant policies. “We are committed to working together with governments to complement mass public transport with these new micromobility alternatives so that people can get around in a more sustainable and efficient way,” said MOVO CEO Pedro Rivas.

Diese Abwägung ist im Techcrunch-Text auch nicht ansatzweise vorhanden - es fehlt sogar der Hinweis dass Viber im Gegensatz zum Facebook Messenger und WhatsApp nicht in die Conversation hineinlauschen und daraus resultierende Daten verkaufen kann.

As of September 2018, the app has a bit over 1B users worldwide and claims it has surpassed WhatsApp in Russia. Pushing its privacy, encryption and not collecting any data as a USP, Viber generates revenues from fee-based service like long distance calls to non-Viber users and from branded communication.

Recently the application has introduced a new redesign and we heard the company is working closely with payment provider Mastercard to pilot some new services.

That's been Silicon Valley conventional wisdom for at least a decade, but the new focus on data privacy in the wake of Facebook's Cambridge Analytica scandal has inspired the world to re-examine the maxim. It's pretty clear now that it's an oversimplification, and there's a strong case to be made that thinking this way is downright dangerous.

That doesn't mean we let services like Facebook off the hook, but we should be cognizant that there are other ways to monetize a free service outside of "profiling" users to optimize advertising.

One good example is Viber. Founded in 2010 as a mobile-first messaging service (then a novel idea), Viber now has about half a billion monthly active users worldwide. And it doesn't do advertising in the traditional way.
